I was digging through one of my memory boxes the other day looking for a letter to give to my daughter for a school project when I discovered a lined yellow piece of paper with words written in my mom’s signature handwritting with those bold capital letters and her trademark bright colored magic markers. The title of the letter was ” The Meanest Mother of all.” It started off by saying, ” I am the meanest Mother of all, I make you eat your vegetables and do your homework when you get home from school. “I am the meanest Mother of all, I make you wear a sweater when it’s cold outside.” “I am the meanest Mother of all, I get to know your friends’ parents before letting you go to their house and I call to make sure you are okay.” The letter goes on like this for two pages until the very end which says “because I do and will always love you unconditionally and with all my heart, I am proud to be the meanest mother of all.” All of a sudden I was transported back to my unreasonable hormone laden adolescence standing in the corner of my bedroom half crying half yelling the words, you are the meanest mom in the world. At the time, my verbal accusations seemed more than justified because I’m sure that whatever I was doing or wanted, I was right and my mom was wrong. I also remember after one of those childlike door slamming tantrums, waking up to that two page lined yellow piece of paper lying on the night stand next to my bed. I know that apologies were spoken and hugs and tears were always part of the make-up process but I don’t believe I really appreciated the significance of that letter until I just pulled it out dozens of years later. As I looked over at my soon to be seven year old daughter, I couldn’t help but think about a page she wrote in her pint sized journal after I had said no to either letting her watch television or have some candy, it read ” my mom is mean” I don’t believe that I am just like my mom and I already know that we have different parenting styles however our core values, our overprotective natures, our willingness to put our children’s needs ahead of ours and the realization that even if our child doesn’t agree, we will persevere and proudly wear the moniker of “the meanest mother of the world.” On this very special day, I wish all of you Moms out there … mean or not… the most wonderful Mother’s day filled with lots of love.

My husband and I own a small business in Page, and we are at work most of the time. I grew up here in Page, and my husband moved to AZ in 1976 from South Lake Tahoe NV. In our spare time we both enjoy music, we each play and instrument, and walking the dogs. Arizona has made me love history even more and makes me thankful I live in such a beautiful state.

I enjoy the art of Old Town Scottsdale and all that old town has to offer. The beauty of our nearby mountains and the wonderful museums. There isn’t anything I don’t like about Arizona. Well, maybe the overcrowding when the snowbirds get here, but it’s not bad.
